Reading and
Homework Room 1
The most important homework
in Year one is reading.
Your child will bring
reading books home to share with you every night. Please make a quiet time each day for your
child to read to you. Keep it positive
and encourage and praise your child as they read.
Reading materials your child may bring
home:
Familiar books from the browsing box
A new book read with the teacher today
Books they have made
Books the class or the reading group have made
Poetry books (Each Friday)
Library books (Each Monday, please return by the
following Monday)
Your child may also bring:
Alphabet book
Alphabet games and activities
Tommy the word Turtle
Word games and activities
A maths activity
When your child reads try not to leap in too quickly to correct them.
Give them time to work it out. A good rule of thumb is:
Pause Wait
10 seconds
Prompt What
is in the picture? What does the word begin with? Try again from the beginning
of the line; what is the next word? etc.
Praise Super
reading, great fixing up, well done etc.
The aim of home reading is practice, success and most
of all enjoyment.
If your child is finding the book difficult or is
reluctant try reading the book with them or to them and do lots of talking
about the story.
